This is probably the most common misconception I come across amongst people who are curious to try Reiki. So let's talk about it!
When I first heard about Reiki, I didn’t "believe" in it. In fact, I approached it as a skeptic, curious only on an intellectual level: What is this thing people are talking about? I wasn’t looking for transformation. I wasn’t even looking for results. I just wanted to understand it.
What happened next completely changed my life.
During my studies, something totally unexpected happened—I felt the energy. It wasn’t subtle or imaginary; it was undeniable. It flowed through me and actually moved my physical body in a way I couldn’t explain but also couldn’t ignore. That experience shattered my assumptions, not just about Reiki but about the limits we place on ourselves when we cling too tightly to belief—or disbelief.
So many people tell me, “Reiki won’t work for me because I don’t believe in it.” But here’s the thing: Reiki doesn’t require belief. Like gravity, it’s not contingent on your faith in it. It simply exists.
Think about electricity. Most of us don’t fully understand how it works. We can’t see it, and we don’t have to believe in it. But when we flip the switch, the light comes on. Reiki is no different. The energy flows whether or not you “believe” in it.
What I’ve learned is that belief can sometimes be a barrier. It can hold us back from trying something new, from opening ourselves to experiences that could enrich our lives in ways we never imagined.
So, if you’re curious about Reiki but hesitant because you don’t “believe” in it, I encourage you to let that go. You don’t need belief to give it a try. If the thought has dropped in to your consciousness, don't ignore it for years like I did. Just give it a try. You literally have absolutely nothing to lose. Worst case scenario, you have a deeply relaxing experience (which in itself is worth it's weight in gold in these stressful times) but maybe you could experience something a little more unexpected? Maybe it could be a life-changing experience, just like it was for me?
Sometimes the most powerful transformations happen when we’re willing to set aside what we think we know and simply open ourselves to the possibility of something more...
Are you ready to flip the switch?
